Have you ever wondered what foam roofing is, or where it started? Below is a brief explanation of where foam roofing came from.
Urethane foam technology emanates from polyurethane chemistry, a unique branch of chemistry developed in the 1930’s. During the 1950’s, urethane foam became commercially available in the United States, and by the early 1970’s, urethane foams were being specifically designed for roofing applications. Urethane foam, also commonly referred to as PUF, is a remarkable roofing material that functions as both structural insulation and waterproofing. During application, special equipment combines separate chemical components causing a chemical reaction that produces foam on whatever surface the chemical mixture is sprayed. The reaction produces a monolithic membrane, meaning there are no seams or joints. This membrane contains both closed cells filled with an insulating gas and open cells that allow the passage of gases including water vapor. Urethane foam is not UV stable and must be covered or coated.
Left uncovered, the strong Arizona sunlight will deteriorate the “skin” and cell surfaces of foam roof coating causing a gradual disintegration or “vanishing” of the foam. The foam coating or covering is extremely important to the long-term effectiveness of the urethane foam roof. It must protect against sunlight (UV) deterioration, physical damage, water penetration, and must allow the foam to breathe.
Some urethane foam roofs in Arizona that were installed in the 1970’s are still functioning perfectly due to proper maintenance and re-coating. However, there are many more urethane roofs that have deteriorated due to external damage or lack of maintenance.

The roof and workmanship by the Crew looks great. Miguel truly took his time to explain the technical aspects of the project and how things needed to be done during installation to ensure the quality work that would guarantee our home would have a roof we could trust for years to come. He was onsite daily to ensure that quality workmanship. And now we are happy to be able to look forward to enjoying rainstorms again!
Jim, owner of Canyon State Roofing & Consulting sent Managing Superintendent Miguel Beltran to our home for an estimate to replace all roofing underlayment. We built our custom home 28 years ago and it was time for replacement. Miguel was the project leader and would stop by every day in his travels to physically check every aspect of his crew's work in-progress, informing myself as well. The crew performed excellent craftsman work. Very professional courteous workers. Every morning this dedicated crew was at my home, 0:700 am starting time ready to accomplish their planned sections of roofing for that day. This crafted crew was always thinking a few steps ahead to accomplish that common goal. Always thoroughly cleaned up at the end of each day. We had an active leak in our kitchen and a friend referred us to Canyon State Roofing. The house is 30 years old and it was time for a new roof. Miguel and his crew did a wonderful job. They started the project a couple of days early and worked quickly and efficiently. The work area was cleaned up each day including running magnets to get the nails up. They did such a great job. It was hard to find similar tile but they got pretty close and the new tiles were hidden at the back of the house. The new valleys will really help direct the water away from the house foundation. Much more efficient and the roof looks great. We had a double layer of underlayment put down to help protect the roof! Thanks Jim, Miguel and crew for all your hard work.
